Supporting Maui’s Community Through the Healing Power of Horses

Harriet “Haku” D. Baldwin

August 21, 1913 – October 28, 2003

A vision born from the heart of an extraordinary woman, Harriet "Haku" D. Baldwin. Her legacy is not merely etched in stone, but in the joyful laughter of children, the gentle nicker of horses, and the healing interaction between human and horse.

Haku's journey began with a single moment of inspiration. Watching a young disabled acquaintance light up with pure elation atop a horse, she glimpsed a profound truth: the powerful bond between horses and humans had the power to change lives.

In 1973, with nothing but determination and an unwavering belief in the healing bond between horses and humans, Haku conducted the first therapeutic riding sessions on the very grounds where her legacy continues today. "I hoped someday to be able to share this experience with other children," Haku once said, her eyes twinkling with the memory of that first ride. Her hope blossomed into reality in 1992 with the founding of the Maui Animal Aloha Center (MAAC).

What began as a personal calling became a pioneering effort in equine-assisted on Maui. Today, as equine hooves still travel across the fields of Makawao, Haku's presence is felt in every triumphant smile, every small victory, and every moment of connection between human and horse. Throughout history, we have worked toward a single purpose: providing a safe and supportive place for people and horses to interact, where that bond could flourish for those in need.
